GKduo:

Matthew Golombisky (acoustic/electric bass, effects, likable noise, and melodica) and Quin Kirchner (drums, samples, melodica, and tapes) originally met in New Orleans over five years ago. After their meeting, they began to play as much as possible together with groups such as QMRplus, Grilly Biggs, Red Shift, The Hall Monitors, The Other Planets, etc. After Hurricane Katrina, they eventually landed in Chicago.

This new project, with old collective roots, is alive and exciting. With meter changing grooves to audio landscapes and haunting melodies, they capture the audience immediately. Golombisky improvises melodic passages that seem like they've been worked on for years on acoustic and electric bass with (or without) an array of effects. He also plays melodica, various percussion, and samples live events, manipulating them into chaos, or melancholic drones. Kirchner, with his drum set and percussion toys, lays down beats that are not to be ignored by any being. One can always hear so many influences coming through each stroke, from his studies in Cuba to his street and university education in New Orleans, Chicago, and New York City. His use of melodica and tape machine is an important element in this duo's sound. Without it, it's a different band.

Since their arrival in Chicago, they have been blessed to be welcomed to the jazz and creative music scene, playing with such greats as Jeb Bishop, Dave Rempis, Kent Kessler, Tim Daisy, Daniele D'Agaro, Nate McBride, Josh Berman, Jason Adasiewicz, Sam Macy, among others, and in bands such as, Tomorrow Music Orchestra, Lucky 7s, Pedway, and ZING!.

In their past, they have shared the stage with Ellis Marsalis, Jason Marsalis, Maurice Brown, James Singleton, Ed Petersen, Will Thompson, Simon Lott, Brian Coogan, Steve Masakowski, Brian Seeger, Doug Bickel, John Ellis, Jeff Albert, John Frelich, Dr. Jimbo Walsh, Rob Wagner, Jesse McBride, Trombone Shorty, Irene Sage, Moyuba, etc.

PRESS:

"Later that night [at the High Mayhem Festival 2007], GKduo, a bass and drum duo, left everyone a bit stunned, to put it mildly. The Chicago music-ians are New Orleans transplants who have played and recorded at High Mayhem Studios before. Bass player Matthew Golombisky and drummer Quin Kirchner burned through their set and encore with furious composi-tions and a deceptively simple looped sound." - Gabe Gomez, Santa Fe Reporter, Sept. 26, 07

"Expect interlocked stop-stutter-funk-and-dissolve grooves that defy
easy genre classifications." - Ross Compton, The Lexington Project
